Paika Rebellion : 1st start over of Freedom Struggle
The Paika Rebellion, also called the Paika Bidroha.
It was an armed rebellion against Company rule in India in 1817.
The Paikas rose in rebellion under their leader Bakshi Jagabandhu and, projecting Lord Jagannath as the symbol of Odia unity, the rebellion quickly spread across most of Odisha before being put down by the Company's forces.
It is now declared to be the first Indian armed movement to gain independence, replacing the prevailing view of the first one being the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
The Paikas were the traditional militia of Odisha. They served as warriors and were charged with policing functions during peacetime
5th Ambedkar Conclave
The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the fifth International Ambedkar Conclave, being organised by the Forum of SC and ST Legislators and Parliamentarians and Dr Ambedkar Chamber of Commerce, today (December 2, 2021) in New Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, the President appreciated the Forum of SC and ST Legislators and Parliamentarians for organising this conclave.
He noted that this Forum is constantly highlighting issues of social and economic justice and playing an important role in spreading the thoughts and ideas of Dr Ambedkar. He was also happy to note that this conclave focusesoneducation, entrepreneurship, innovation and economic development along with issue of constitutional rights.
The President said that Babasaheb was in favour of awakening the moral conscience of the society. He used to say that rights cannot be protected only by laws, but it is also necessary to have moral and social consciousness in the society. He always emphasised on non-violent and constitutional means.The President said that in our Constitution many provisions have been made to protect the interests of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Article 46 of the Constitution directs that the State shall develop the educational and economic interests of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes with special care. Also, in this article, the State has been directed to protect them from social injustice and all forms of exploitation. A number of institutions and procedures have been put in place to give effect to these guidelines. There has been lot of improvements. But, a lot remains to be done by our country and society.
Dam Safety Bill, 2019 passed by Parliament
The Parliament has cleared the Dam Safety Bill, 2019 for surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of all specified dams across the country.
The Bill seeks to prevent dam failure, related disasters and provide for institutional mechanism to ensure their safe functioning.
Surveillance and inspection : The Bill provides for perpetual
surveillance, inspections and monitoring of operation and maintenance
of all specified dams
State Dam Safety Organisation State Dam Safety Organisation shall be responsible to the technical head of the Department dealing with Dam Safety.
Records of dam failures and dam incidents Every State Dam Safety Organisation is required to report the event of any dam failure under their jurisdiction to the National Dam Safety Authority. It is also required to maintain the records of major dam incidents of each specified dams under their jurisdiction , and furnish all such information to the Authority as and when required by them.
National Dam Safety Authority The Bill provides for establishment of a National Dam Safety Authority by the Central government. It shall be headed by an officer not below the rank of Additional Secretary to the Government of India who have knowledge of, and adequate qualification, experience and capacity in, dealing with problems relating to the dam engineering and dam safety management.
ADB fund for Enhancing schools in India
Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved nearly Rs 3,752 crore funding to the government for enhancing quality of school education and also mitigate the impact of coronavirus pandemic on students' learning.
Aim : to help the government of India improve the quality of the country's school education and mitigate the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on students' learning
The loan supports the Integrated Scheme for School Education (Samagra Shiksha) and the new Exemplar School Initiative of the Ministry of Education (MOE) to improve education quality by focusing on inclusive and equitable learning outcomes.
India - EU : to expand the clean energy Cooperation
India and the European Union have vowed to scale up cooperation in areas of clean energy with a focus on offshore wind, green hydrogen and solar power besides deciding to
encourage investments in the field of energy efficiency.
Various aspects of deepening clean energy cooperation were
discussed at a meeting of the India-EU Energy Panel on December 1.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the panel agreed on a detailed work programme until 2023 to implement clean energy and climate partnership that was agreed in 2016. Some of the areas identified for cooperation included ensuring nearly zero energy buildings and renewable energy sources, including solar and offshore wind.
India hits target 40% power generation capacity
India has achieved the target of 40 per cent of its installed electricity generation capacity being from non-fossil energy sources.
"At COP 21, as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), India had committed to achieving 40 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil energy sources by 2030.
"The country has achieved this target in November 2021 itself," the ministry of new and renewable energy said.
According to the statement, the country's installed renewable energy (RE) capacity stands at 150.05 GW, while its nuclear energy-based installed electricity capacity is 6.78 GW.
This brings the total non-fossil fuels based installed energy capacity to 156.83 GW -- which is 40.1 per cent of the total installed electricity capacity of 390.8 GW
IFFCO ranks 1st among 300 global Cooperative
The Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) has been ranked ‘number one Cooperative’ among the top 300 cooperatives in the world, withholding its position from last year.
According to the statement, the ranking is based on the ratio of turnover over the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. It signifies that IFFCO is contributing significantly to the GDP and economic growth of the nation. It also relates the turnover of the enterprise to the wealth of the country according to the 2021 edition of the 10th Annual World Cooperative Monitor (WCM) report published by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). IFFCO has also stepped up to 60th Position in overall Turnover ranking from 65th position in last financial year.
Commemorative Postage stamp : Mahindra group : 75th Year
Devusinh Chauhan on Wednesday released a commemorative postage stamp on the Mahindra group to mark 75 years of the company. Chauhan urged the group to collaborate with the postal department to improve the delivery of social services in rural areas.
OPCW approves Global prohibition for Chemical Weapon
A global prohibition on chemical weapons to tools for law enforcement won the approval of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on an 85-10 vote.
This decision sends a clear signal that countries cannot hide their work to advance an offensive capability for the aerosolized use of central nervous system-acting chemicals under the guise of doing so for law enforcement"
The US, in collaboration with Australia, Switzerland, and 49 other countries, cosponsored the decision, which was adopted by a super
majority with 85 in favor and only ten voting against the decision.
"The danger posed by these chemicals was initially highlighted by their ill-considered use by Russia in 2002 to end the Moscow Theatre siege, which left 129 hostages dead.
International Abolition Day of Slavery: Dec 2
International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is marked annually on December 2 to focus on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation and other forms of recruitment of humans, including children in armed conflict. The day marks the anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) OD THE UN Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others of December 2, 1949.
Indian Long Jumper wins : Woman of the Year award from : World Athletics
Legendary Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George has been bestowed with the Woman of the Year Award by World Athletics for grooming talent in the country and advocating gender equality.
The 44-year-old Anju, the only Indian to have won a medal in the World Championships with a long jump bronze in the 2003 edition.
The award is given to recognise a woman who has dedicated her life to the sport of athletics. Anju is the second recipient of the prestigious award, which was started in 2019, after Ethiopia's double Olympic champion Derartu Tulu.
